As the High Holidays roll in, we’re thinking a lot about what it means to gather, reflect, and move forward together. And in true Challah Back Girls (CBG) style, that reflection starts with the bread on our table: round challah. I’m Sara Loffman, CEO and co-founder of Challah Back Girls. Every loaf you order is part of a story that intertwines unity, tradition and social justice.
Why Round Challah?
Every Friday throughout the year, Challah Back Girls braids challah for Shabbat — strands woven together to represent peace, truth, and justice. But for Rosh Hashana, we go round. That circle isn’t just pretty, it’s powerful. There’s no beginning, no end, just a simple yet powerful symbol of eternity, unity, and wholeness — the very values we knead into every loaf for each Shabbat and holiday.
When that circle meets sweetness — raisins, honey, or apple cinnamon sugar — it becomes a little edible wish that your year be joyful, abundant, and full of light. This intentionality is woven directly into our routines through the High Holidays.
Where Challah Back Girls + OneTable Come Together
At CBG, we take that basic, round piece of dough and stretch it, literally and figuratively, as far as it can reach. Born at the start of the pandemic, CBG grew from my siblings and me baking in our Teaneck, NJ kitchen to shipping thousands of challah, babka bites, merch, and now pre-measured kits nationwide (and even Toronto, Canada!).
That pure Jewish joy and act of breaking bread is shared with OneTable, and we love collaborating with this amazing organization. Round challah becomes a centerpiece for both of our groups. At CBG, it’s how we bake our values of tikkun olam (repairing the world), education, and empathy into every loaf. Challah isn’t just food, it’s an invitation to gather, deepen our understanding for one another, and create moments of meaning that go beyond the last bite.
CBG bakes the world a more just, equitable, and compassionate place one challah at a time. We carry the Jewish value of tikkun olam with every flavor we create, every justice partner we spotlight, and every table we connect.
CBG is about giving back and connecting with tables across North America in delicious and unique ways, and we’re thrilled to carry that spirit forward as part of the national Nourishment program with OneTable Hosts will receive an exclusive 10% discount when you select CBG as your Nourishment for a OneTable gathering. Whether it’s the iconic Apple Cinnamon Sugar challah (my forever fav) or Coffee Crumb challah (my sister and co-founder Hannah’s go-to), each bite brings us closer to baking the world a more just and compassionate place for all!
